Lynn Miller Scholarship Fund

"Hampshire College was founded on the notion of independent study. We were here in the beginning to teach students how to teach themselves, and to liberate them from courses. You got through Hampshire by becoming an independent colleague." -- Professor Lynn Miller

The Lynn Miller Scholarship Fund provides grants for tuition, room, and board to promising students with a concentration in the School of Natural Science who have the greatest financial need. Highly motivated students for whom a Hampshire education has the potential to be transformative--because of poverty, community deprivation, family hardship, or another significant challenge--receive preference. Former Hampshire College board chair Gaye Hill has generously offered to match all contributions to the fund dollar for dollar up to $1 million.

Lynn is best known as a founding faculty member; he is an integral part of defining science education at Hampshire into a model for curricular innovation and collaboration.

His influence spans across campus, from advising students completing their Division I requirements with no interest in science; to mentoring Division III students who continue their studies and become prominent researchers in their fields. Twenty percent of our science students presented their work at peer-reviewed conferences, and 5 percent are lead authors in peer-reviewed journals.
