The Squad

In 1976, Hampshire’s rural location inspired five EMT-certified students to create the on-campus Hampshire College Emergency Medical Service (HCEMS). HCEMS is one of the longest-running student organizations on campus, and provides quick emergency responses, especially if local fire departments are delayed in inclement weather.

Officially in operation since 1978, HCEMS has gone through a variety of leadership styles and membership sizes, yet there is seldom a day during the school year that the program is not in service.

The Squad is comprised of Nationally certified EMTs of all levels of experience. When an EMT first joins HCEMS they start out as a Shadow. Shadows go to calls and watch to learn how to run a scene. Once they are comfortable they can become B packs, who help the A packs by taking vitals and helping with medical interventions. A packs are responsible for care rendered on scene as well as teaching the B packs and Shadows. A packs administer all treatments and medications while also making transport decisions.

A packs and B packs must have both national and Mass state EMT certifications to work for HCEMS. One of the goals of HCEMS is to help every EMT become confident medical providers no matter their prior experience.
