How to Apply for a Direct Parent PLUS Loan
Direct PLUS loans are processed through our financial aid office. Follow the two steps below to apply:
- New Direct PLUS loan borrowers must complete both steps listed below.
- Repeat borrowers only need to complete Step 1.
PLUS Loan Applications Accepted Beginning July 1
Step 1: Parent borrowers must apply for a Direct PLUS Loan at StudentAid.gov. You will need to enter the amount you want to borrow. To help you determine the amount of the student's bill, please review the appropriate Bill Worksheet (see below). If you prefer to request a loan through a paper process, you may request a form by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling the loan counselor.
Step 2: Parent borrowers must complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) for the Direct PLUS loan. The MPN may be signed electronically at StudentAid.gov using the parent's FSA ID. Be sure to select the MPN for the Parent PLUS loan. If you do not have an FSA ID, you may request one. Signing the note is a one-time requirement. Future Direct PLUS loans will be linked to the original MPN.

Review the appropriate Bill Worksheet to help you determine the amount of the outstanding bill balance after financial aid is deducted. Bill worksheets are available on our main webpage. Be sure to add approximately 4.3% to the loan amount to cover the Direct PLUS Loan fee which reduces the amount the college receives. For example, if you need to cover $10,000 for the year, add approximately $430 to the amount requested so Hampshire will receive approximately $10,000 after the loan fee is deducted.
