School of Natural Science Endowed Funds
Supporting Division II and Division III Student Research
The spring 2015 application deadline for NS Endowed Funds is Wednesday, February 25, 2015, by 4 p.m.
Applications for NS Endowed Funds are accepted only ONCE per semester, near the beginning of each fall or spring semester. The application deadline is determined each semester based on Division III filing dates. There is no open enrollment period, and the date for submissions will be posted above when it is determined.
NS Student Endowed Funds
Samuel Morris Sustainability Endowment Fund
Supports Division II and Division III student research in environmental and agricultural sustainability. Award range: approximately $300-$600. Faculty contact: Jason Tor, firstname.lastname@example.org
Dana Meadows Sustainability Award Endowment Fund
Supports Division II and Division III student research in agricultural sustainability; in particular, projects directly related to the Hampshire Community-Supported Agriculture Program. Award range: approximately $200-$400. Faculty contact: Brian Schultz, email@example.com
Denice O'Neill Scholarship Fund
Supports Division II and III research and internships. The proposed student research, project, or internship must relate to at least one of Denice's passions: medicine, anthropology, woman and child health and health care, or child studies. Justine Salton Memorial Fund
Supports the research of women Division III students, though Division II students will be considered. Preference will be given to those working in evolutionary biology or related fields, but applications from women working in other areas are also welcome. Award range: approximately $300-$600. Tara Nelson Award

Larry Beede Scholarship Fund for Southwest Studies

Southwest Studies Award
Supports Division II and Division III student research projects in the southwest. Student research at the intersection of environmental and cultural issues and commitment to working on SW issues as evidenced by previous or current coursework desirable. Award range: up to $1000. Applications are due February 25, 2015, by 4 p.m. Submit application items by enrolling into cws.hamphire.edu using your Hampshire user name and password and uploading the necessary documents by the application deadline. Please combine files into one PDF or Word document before uploading.

- The student must be in good academic standing.
- Funds must be used to support Division II (Morris, Meadows, Dr. Lucy, Nelson, O’Neill) or Division III research (all funds). Project-related expenses include travel, equipment, supplies and materials. The awards do not cover food and housing. Each item must be justified in the budget.
- Awards will not be given for projects that have already been completed.
- Applications will be reviewed by the designated faculty contact and any related advisory committees.
The following sections must be included in your proposal:
- Cover sheet. 1 page maximum including:
- Email contact
- Title of project/activity
- Dates of project/activity
- Name of fund or funds to which you are applying (include all NS funds and others) and list amount requested from each fund
- Division are you currently
- Current division completion date
- Name of your divisional chair
- Name of faculty supervisor of this project
- Indicate if you need IRB or IACUC approval or not (see section 5 below for more details). If approval is needed, indicate if it's pending or if an approval letter is included.
- Proposal. A detailed funding proposal addressed to a general academic audience (single-spaced, 12 pt. type, 2 page maximum) including the following sections:
- Introduction. Describe the purpose of your proposed project or research and briefly discuss the relevant literature (including citations). Your introduction should demonstrate that you have thought critically about the research and methodology or project plan. State the specific aims or research questions of your project.
- Methods. Describe how you plan to accomplish the project or execute the research.
- Timeline. Describe the proposed time frame for the project and when major milestones begin and end.
- Outcomes and/or Implications. Discuss the relevance of this research to the field and implications for future investigation.
- Academic Preparation. A statement of your preparation for this work covering relevant courses or internships, skills you have acquired, and previous research in which you have been involved. Direct any questions about this section to the appropriate faculty contact person.
- References. List in bibliographic format the references that you cite in the proposal.
- Budget. Necessary project-related costs are eligible for funding. These include materials, supplies, small equipment or software (all become the property of Hampshire College at the conclusion of the research), payments to research subjects, and travel expenses for field study (with field study leave or full enrollment). List each item, its cost, and explain why it is needed for this project (a sentence for each item). Also, list the names and amounts of other received or pending grants. If you need lab materials ordered, add $25 to $50 into your budget to cover shipping and handling costs.
- Dissemination Plan. The results and impact of your research efforts rest in the effectiveness of your dissemination activities. With effective dissemination, the awareness, recognition, and possible use of your grant outcomes may be greater than expected. Sound planning can help achieve this result. How will your research results be disseminated and communicated to a broader audience? Examples could include presentations (e.g. NS Friday Seminar series, classes, or conferences), written reports (e.g. thesis, journal articles), and online venues, to name a few.
- IRB or IACUC approval. If you are using human subjects in your project, attach a copy of your IRB approval. [Under federal law, the college’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) must approve all research involving human subjects. IRB guidelines are available from the Dean of Faculty Office.] If you are using animal subjects in your research, attach a copy of your Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval. If you have applied for either but have not yet received approval, your funding will be contingent upon you providing a copy of the approval letter.
- A letter of support from your Division III chair (Division III students) or Division II chair (Division II students) or your research supervisor, stating your academic strengths and weaknesses, the appropriateness of this project for Division III or Division II, and approval of the budget. Ask the chair to email the letter to Sarah Aldrich, firstname.lastname@example.org, by the application deadline.
- Division III students must attach a copy of the filed Division III contract AND a copy of the Division II evaluation (screen print from TheHub for both). If the Division II evaluation is not yet available, attach copies of all Division II course evals (screen print from TheHub).
- Division II students must attach a copy of the filed Division II contract (screen print from TheHub).
- Quality of proposed work, including scientific merit and feasibility.
- Quality of previous work and student’s preparation for current project.
- Demonstrated need for special equipment, travel, or supplies (justification of budget).
Rules for award recipients
Students who receive an award are expected to write a brief (1 page) report at the end of the project, summarizing their findings and describing how the funds were spent. The reports should be submitted to email@example.com. In addition, awardees are expected to submit an abstract that will be posted to the Hampshire College website and inform the community of any presentations or publications that resulted from the work. Finally, in ten or so years after graduation, awardees are encouraged to return to Hampshire to talk to current students about their fabulous careers!
