2013 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Grant Recipients

Seven Hampshire students have been chosen as recipients of the 2013 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Grant by the Career Options Resource Center (CORC) to support internships in theatrical motion picture production.

Magdalena Bermudez 10F, Molly Epstein 09F, Nicholas Kane 12F, Nikolaus Koetch 11F, Swathi Mohan 10F, Sam Vail 11F, and Zuzanna Weyman 11F will all receive funding through the $7,000 grant, which is used to support internships either with Hampshire alums or with production companies with a connection to Hampshire College.

Bermudez will intern in New Jersey with Carl Elsaesser 07F at Hubub, Inc., an independent film company. She will assist with Brown Ash, a film that attempts to show the entire life of a mother from Maine in the course of a single day. Her responsibilities will include promoting the film, scheduling shoots, and researching archival footage.

Epstein will intern with Kirk Simon 72F and Karen Goodman 72F of the Oscar-winning documentary film company Goodman Pictures in New York. She will assist in producing a short film documenting a master class artist and a group of students from the YoungArts program in Miami.

Kane will intern with Jeffrey Tuchman 73F and Amy Goldstein 76F at Documania Films and Span Productions in Los Angeles. With Documania, he will assist with a series of short documentaries on health access in several underserved California communities, while at Span he will be involved in research, production, and post-production.

Koetch is interning with Empathy in Motion Film Productions in Amherst, where he will work with independent filmmaker Sanford Lewis. He will assist with editing and promotion and producing motion graphics for a documentary on contact improvisation dance.

Mohan's internship is with Roger Sherman 73F at Florentine Films in New York. She will assist with research and development for The Search for Israeli Cuisine, a film that tells the story of Israel through food.

Vail's internship is also with Florentine Films, but with Ken Burns 71F in Walpole, NH. He will be involved with films about country music and the Vietnam War, and will assist with photo research, logging footage, checking scripts, attending screenings, and organizing databases.

Weyman will intern with Brendan Toller 04F at Outré Films in Branford, CT, on a documentary about Danny Fields, a pivotal figure in music and culture in the late 20th century. She will assist in transcription, updating the script, social media outreach, archival research, editing, and shooting.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Grant assists in fostering educational opportunities for students at accredited educational institutions and other nonprofit organizations who might not otherwise be able to participate in a motion picture production-focused internship due to financial limitations. In 2013, the program distributed $175,000 to 22 institutions.
