April 6, 2019: Letter from Interim President Kenneth Rosenthal

Dear Hampshire Community,

I believe in Hampshire College. The Board of Trustees has asked me to become Interim President to help Hampshire find its way in a difficult time, and I will do my best.

Hampshire was always intended to be a college that would examine and re-imagine itself from time to time. It will take the cooperation of the entire Hampshire community to create the model that will become the next Hampshire College. As someone who has been a part of Hampshire College for more than 52 years, I know how difficult that will be. And how wonderful.

I appreciate the hard work of my predecessor, Mim Nelson, who acknowledged the challenges she found at Hampshire and in her short time here worked hard to address them. Former Board Chair Gaye Hill and Vice Chair Kim Saal, whose deep devotion to the College should never be questioned, gave of themselves in ways we will never fully know as they worked to shape Hampshire’s future. I am very grateful for their passionate service.

It’s time for us to take a deep breath, enjoy our early spring weekend, and be ready to get to work on Monday.

I am happy to be working with you. You will hear more from me again soon.

Ken Rosenthal
