Indigenous Filmmaker Billy Luther 00F Makes Feature Film Writing and Directing Debut

The film Frybread Face & Me, written and directed by Billy Luther 00F, recently completed filming in New Mexico.

The semi-autobiographical film tells the story of a young boy who goes to live with his grandmother on a Navajo reservation and learns more about his history and culture through the experience. Frybread Face & Me is executive produced by Academy and Emmy Award-winning producer and director Taika Waititi.

The Native American independent film writer and director first debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 with his documentary Miss Navajo, which followed a young woman’s journey competing in the Miss Navajo Nation beauty pageant. Miss Navajo was produced and distributed by PBS’ Independent Lens.

Luther returned to the Sundance Film Festival in 2011 with his second documentary film, Grab, which looked at the Laguna ceremonial practice of giving. Luther studied film at Hampshire College and created several short documentary pieces during his time as a student. He is a graduate of the 2020 Sundance Institute Directors and Screenwriters Labs.
