Dec. 6-10: "FIVE"

Three Hampshire College students—Tara Morrison, Gavriela Shoshana, and Anna Stewart Zellwegger—have artwork in the exhibition "FIVE" in Herter Gallery at UMass Amherst December 6-10.

"FIVE" presents work by the 15 students of the 2013 Five College Advanced Studio Seminar, a course made up of top art students from each campus in the Five College consortium. This year the students worked with New York City painter and educator Jaya Howey.

Students carried a rigorous workload of weekly assignments that were critiqued by Howey and fellow students in classes held on the Hampshire College campus. Readings, class discussions, film screenings, and field trips rounded out the course, which included a day-long visit to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA).

"This particular group of students is deeply engaged with their work and thoroughly invested in their role as aspiring artists," says Howey. "They all engage with the course in an enthusiastic and meaningful way."

An opening reception for the show will be held on Friday, December 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Herter Art Gallery is in Herter Hall at UMass and open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
