Women's Cross-Country Team Wins Conference Championship

The Yankee Small College Conference Championship is among several accolades Hampshire athletics received this fall

The Hampshire College women’s cross-country team Saturday wrapped up the season by winning its first-ever Yankee Small College Conference Championship, in Randolph, Vt. The team finished with 35 points and a 31:46 average time for 6k.

Lara Matthias took second overall, Liz O’Brien was third, and Ash Lamoreaux earned fifth — and all earned All-Conference individual honors.

“It felt fantastic to win,” Matthias says. “We’re a tight-knit group, and it was really good for us to have a championship as a tangible culmination to the season — I really feel like we accomplished something as a group.”

Women’s cross-country wasn’t the only Hampshire team to celebrate success this fall:

  • The men’s cross-country team finished third in its contest, led by All-Conference selection Ander O’Dell Garcia, in seventh place. The third-place finish is the team’s best ever.
  • Although the women’s soccer team finished with a loss to Unity College in the conference semifinals, the team, led by All-Conference players Natalie Strohm and Lea Sweeney, received the conference sportsmanship award for the integrity the women demonstrated on the field all season long.
  • Men’s soccer didn’t qualify for the conference tournament but showed marked improvement throughout the season and also received the conference sportsmanship award.

Director of Hampshire’s Outdoor Programs, Recreation, and Athletics (OPRA) Brad King is quick to praise Hampshire’s athletes for their participation in sports. “I couldn't be more proud of how all our athletes and coaches represent Hampshire on and off the field,” he says. “The many awards and accomplishments of this season are a great representation of their leadership, dedication, and positive approach to their respective sports.”
