Sarah Hews

Hampshire mathematics professor Sarah Hews was recently published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. Hews’ research article, “Field-based body temperatures reveal behavioral thermoregulation strategies of the Atlantic marsh fiddler crab,” examines how warmer average temperatures affect certain organisms that use thermoregulation to regulate their body temperatures.

The article was in collaboration with Renae Brodie, a professor of biological sciences at Mount Holyoke College, and part of Hews’ larger work on energy budget modeling.

Hews’ teaching primarily focuses on applying mathematical techniques to biological and physical systems. In addition, her courses emphasize communicating mathematics to a broader audience.

Hews is currently a visiting professor at Amherst College until Spring 2022.
