Hampshire Graduate Jacey Shal’e Carrier 17F Awarded Fulbright to Study in South Korea

Newly minted Hampshire College graduate Jacey Shal’e Carrier 17F has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in South Korea for the 2021-22 academic year.

Newly minted Hampshire College graduate Jacey Shal’e Carrier 17F has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in South Korea for the 2021-22 academic year.

Jacey, a first-generation college student, graduated from Hampshire in the spring of 2021. She studied education leadership and entrepreneurship and plans to become an educator supporting students of all abilities.

While at Hampshire, Jacey was a member of several student groups including the Culture, Brain, and Development program; the Childhood, Youth and Learning program; Campus Leadership and Activities; and Queer and/or Trans People of Color (QTPOC). Her final year at Hampshire, she worked as a paraprofessional at Amherst Regional High School through the AmeriCorps program. Carrier also studied abroad at Goldsmiths, University of London and traveled to and volunteered in several other countries as research for her Div III project on “reimagining the education system and self.”

Jacey is currently turning her Div III into a book and plans to start MÔË's Academy for Leaders to “produce independent and critical thinkers who are entrepreneurs that will solve problems all over the world,” as well as MÔË Foundation for Greatness—a non-profit that helps youth of color to pursue higher education.

Jacey says, “MÔË [pronunciation Maui] derives from the three words I unapologetically use to describe myself: Meraki, a Greek word meaning the love and piece of yourself that you put into your work; Orenda, an Iroqui word meaning making positive change in your life and others; and Elysian, another Greek word, meaning beautiful and creative. These words embody how I work with youth now and intend to operate in the future.”

According to Jacey, MÔË's Academy for Leaders will be a school that prepares youth for all aspects in life while offering a space for every student. “This school will stand out, as it provides the true definition of a holistic learning experience—personal, professional, and academic—with the end goal of guiding students to prosperous and flourishing lifestyles. We will offer a space for students to build, create, and understand what type of learner they are and to know that education isn't just within the classroom and how it can be used for greatness.”

MÔË Academy For Leaders' vision is to create entrepreneurs, and independent and critical thinkers. “Our mission is to help youth identify their academic needs and guide them in finding their true purpose, values, and passions in life,” Jacey says.  “We help students discover and create the best version of themselves by practicing self-growth and proactive mindsets, also known as social emotional learning. A new innovative curriculum will be taught to enhance youths' life academically, personally, and professionally.”
