Div II Profile: ANTON KAPLAN 15F

ANY SURPRISES OR PIVOTS DURING DIV II?

I went into Div II with a strong idea of what I wanted to study that has remained consistent since completing my Div I. My Div II and my own artistic practice are rooted in the belief that everyone should be able to access the arts through opportunity to create, view, experience, and learn. I’m researching and practicing various ways to surmount the barriers, both physical and sociocultural, that prevent individuals and populations from taking part in various forms of art. In my own work, I try to use easily obtainable materials, often creating sculptural paintings from discarded objects and so-called low-art materials, such as newspaper and cardboard. I invite viewers to touch or hold my art. I want to bring art to a more accessible realm of free use and interactivity while bringing a sense of beauty to these objects by drawing attention to the unique materiality they possess.

THE PLAN

  • Develop my art-making skills through studio time and coursework

  • Take courses in art history and art theory

  • My CEL-2 will likely take the form of an internship or volunteer position at an institution that seeks to provide artistic engagement within a specific community.

HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE PASSING DIV II?

Probably by starting on my Div III.
