Div II Profile: CLAIRE SHILLINGTON 15F

WHO HAS SUPPORTED YOU THROUGH DIV II?

My advisers, Chris Cianfrani and Sarah Hews, and my friends have been my strong support system for Division II. I’m always in close contact with my advisers, which I think has been a significant factor in my success during Div II. As I finish my Div II and begin to reflect on the past two years, I’m finally seeing my concentration come together. I study the intersections between human health and environmental sciences, and recently identified water as the element that holds these areas of study together. I’ve centered my education at Hampshire on the gray-water treatment system in the R.W. Kern Center, and have consistently chosen classes to develop the knowledge, skills, and academic experiences I needed to formulate questions and answers about this system. When I started Div II, I was fascinated by this building but wasn’t sure how I’d be able to incorporate it in my areas of study, so it has been a surprise and reward to see that happen. Now I’ve studied the systems for two years and used them as context for the courses I’ve taken. As a result, I now have a solid foundation in biology, chemistry, microbiology, hydrology, statistics, calculus, and epidemiology.

THE PLAN

  • Coursework in chemistry, biology, hydrology, calculus, statistics, mathematical modeling, and public health

  • Continue conducting research at the R.W. Kern Center

  • Work as an EMT on campus

  • Continue involvement in the Integrated Science First-Year Program (ISFP)

  • Group study: Multiple Cultural Perspectives in Science

HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE PASSING DIV II?

By taking a break! I plan to pass at the end of spring and spend my first summer off campus since being at Hampshire.
