Other Worlds Are Possible Event and Community Education Day Focus on Restorative Justice

Hampshire College’s second Other Worlds Are Possible event of the spring semester will be held February 24 and will help kick-off the semester’s first Community Education Day on February 25.

Hampshire College’s second Other Worlds Are Possible event of the spring semester will be held February 24 and will help kick-off the semester’s first Community Education Day on February 25.

Community Education Days are part of the College’s new curricular model and are integrated throughout the academic year. The Other Worlds Are Possible series is a partnership between Community Advocacy, Community Commons (CoCo), and the Hampshire Learning Collaboratives.

Reclaim Ugly with Vanessa Rochelle Lewis on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. EST

Uglification is a tool and ideology that has been used to justify slavery, genocide, and colonialism. Uglification shows up in systemic oppression, in relationships, and internalized in hearts and minds. The talk will consider how one can reclaim their imagination from uglification and heal, empower, and uplift themselves and others. This event is part of the Other Worlds Are Possible series, hosted by Community Advocacy.

Community Education Day on Feb. 25 beginning at noon EST

Community Education Day includes workshops, panels, poetry, art, story circles, and other activities open to students, staff, and faculty and concludes with an interactive keynote on restorative justice.

To Hear & Be Heard: What Restorative and Transformative Justice Have to Offer Us with Jasmyn Story and Honeycomb Justice on Feb. 25 at 4:30 p.m. EST.

This interactive keynote for the February 25 Community Day of Education will discuss how we can shift our punitive culture towards a culture of healing-centered accountability. Participants will look at the limitations imposed through urgency culture, and what tools restorative justice and transformative justice offer communities.

The keynote is part of the 2021 Common Good Practitioner-Scholar Residency, organized by Ethics and the Common Good Project (ECG) in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (IDI), the Community Commons (CoCo), the Lebrón-Wiggins-Pran Cultural Center, Residential Life, the Center for Spiritual Life, the Wellness Center and the In/Justice Learning Collaborative.

Previous Community Education Days focused on dismantling anti-Blackness and the “The 1619 Project.”
