Jurisdiction Guidelines

Jurisdiction of the Amherst or Hadley Police Department: Guidelines of when Police Officers may be contacted

It is nearly impossible to articulate all the crimes or fact patterns requiring police intervention. These are guidelines. Each situation will be looked at individually with decisions being made placing the safety of the Hampshire Community and the safety of the individual/s involved as the top priority.

Considerations will typically include: safety assessment, patterns, seriousness of incident, and the student’s wishes.

Interactions between Hampshire College and the appropriate local police:

Prompt

Incidents where APD/HPD assistance requires prompt notification: in progress crimes where life and safety are at imminent risk.

  • Firearms, weapons or explosions
  • Arson
  • Robbery
  • Hate crimes
  • Death investigations
  • Criminal incidents resulting in serious bodily injury or death
  • Incidents of interpersonal violence including restraining order violations, stalking, and sexual assault
  • Missing persons
  • Felony drug possession
  • Aggravated assault and battery
  • Threats involving violence
  • Active threats (shooters etc.)
  • Motor vehicle accidents where there is personal injury or damage over $1500, or when the offender has left the scene
  • Motor vehicle theft
  • Suicide
  • Transportation order to a hospital

Timely

Incidents whereby the Department of Campus Safety and Security may need additional support or to simply notify APD/HPD.

  • Bias incidents
  • Pattern of minor criminal conduct which may impact community safety
  • Trespass order violation
  • Simple assault and battery
  • Larceny (minor theft)
  • Intrusion alarms
  • Credit card theft
  • Identity theft
  • Missing property
  • Vandalism
  • Minor motor vehicle accidents
