The Center for the Study of Science in Muslim Societies is active in a variety of areas.


The center has begun research on the circulation of science and Islam online videos, funded by a second grant from the Templeton Foundation received in July 2015, and has a catalogue of videos on the internet about Islam and science, funded by a grant from 2014. Learn more »

The first presentation of this research was given by Vika Gardner at a conference at the University of Durham (U.K.), Muslims and Islam in European Modernity, 20 August 2015, entitled "Arguing Normative Islam: European Engagement with Muslim Ideas about Science in Video".

In 2009, Hampshire College and Dr. Salman Hameed received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study the acceptance of evolution among Muslim physicians. 


Hampshire College hosted a conference in October 2-3, 2009 on "Darwin and Evolution in the Muslim World." It brought scholars from around the world to discuss the perception of evolution among Muslims. The conference was supported by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Learn more »


The center's director, Dr. Salman Hameed, engages in the world-wide discussion about Islam and science through his blog, Irtiqa.

Salman Hameed also creates Science ka Adda (Science Café), an Urdu-language video series on astronomy.  Learn more »
